New York City RedLight Cameras

This site was created to make you aware of dangerous intersections in NY City. With this knowledge you can prevent your vehicle from getting into an automobile accident by knowing the intersection where there is a high potential for red light running. These intersections are also equipped with a red light camera to catch those who run a red light. By knowing the location of these cameras you can avoid getting into an accident. A driver who runs a red light at one of these locations will receive a summons in the mail.

When you join this mailing list (it sends just 1 or 2 emails a month) you will receive a link to a WORD or PDF file with updates to the locations of red light cameras when they are available. So far over 175 red light cameras have be located with 100+  locations being verified.

I will soon have available the New York City Red Light Camera list for the Tom Tom 5 GPS navigation system. Most of the data is in, however, I'm validating the data which is a huge job. I try to visit and verify each location to record the ISO 6709 coordinates , Status & remarks, the Latitude & Longitude will also be added.  I hope to have this project finished by early spring. So far it looks very promising. I'm sure the data I'm compiling can be adopted for other system if I only new what information is required.

Download Points of Interest (POI) for Tom Tom & others GPS's

A sample of the TomTom 5 POI overlay files are located here.  These are working samples, the finished product will have a different look & POI's will be identified by street address when available rather than cross street.  It will also be up to date and any known error (bad locations, camera moved/broken, cameras updated, etc). And by join the Red Light Camera group on Yahoo f you will be kept up to date on current legislative activity concerning RLC.

If you like to receive an updated version which has all boroughs please support the administration of N2BQF.ORG with a yearly subscription.

Downloading to your computer

  1. Exit out of TomTom
  2. Connect your Pocket PC (PPC) or other device to your computer.
  3. From your list of POI's (above), select the file you want to download.
  4. Open the downloaded ZIP-file and copy the contents of the zip file to the map folder where your TomTom map files are stored (ie. New_York-Map). (If your maps are on your storage card you can just remove the card from the Pocket PC and write directly to the New_York-Map folder on the SD card with an external card reader/writer.)
  5. If your going to use these files with more than one map, please make sure to put the files in the folder of the area covered by the POI set. (i.e. it can be installed in the Major_Roads_Of_America-Map folder).
  6. If your POI file is an update of a file that’s already on your device, when asked, please confirm to overwrite the previous version of the file.
  7. Now you can disconnect your device from your computer or re-insert the SD card back into your Pocket PC.
  8. Reboot your PPC.
  9. Finally, to make your POI visible on the map, go to ‘Manage POI’ in your TomTom application and choose ‘Enable/Disable POI’.
  10. Then Select the Red_lt_Cam_?? POI.
  11. Set up Proximity Alerts (optional)
Change Preferences -> Manage POI -> Warn when near POI
Select each POI for a borough,
    Select the distance for warning
Select the warning sound, I like Beep 5
Uncheck the "Warn only if POI is on route" box
Repeat until all POIs are set up to warn.
  12. A speacker icon will appear next to each POI that has a warning set.

Note: If you check the "Warn only if POI is on route" box, then you will not be warned of POIs that you approach if:
    1. The POIs are slightly away from the road.
    2. You have no destination and therefore no route planned.

Some important notes

  • POI's are map specific so they should always be used together with a map that contains that borough (or city).
  • Please make sure to have sufficient storage space left on your device/SD-card. If your memory is full, please delete some unused voices or poi-sets and try to download or copy again.
  • Aways make a backup of your SD-card before adding or deleting any files or folders.
